How to use this template

There are lots of team activities around that help a group to come up with a set of values. But these are often quite generic, abstract, and not authentic enough to what's really going on with a team.

Use the Team Iceberg template as a workshop visual pattern, to help a group not only come up with a set of values, but work out together how these values are properly connected to behaviours and results. Here's how:

Start on the left side of the 'iceberg' and ask your group to capture existing behaviours: what current behaviours are we seeing (good and bad)? And then: What results are we seeing from these behaviours? For example: some team members might be sending email and Slack messages late at night, causing stress on others, who don't want to work late at night, but feel like they'll be criticized for not working as hard.

Then, ask the group: what do these behviours reveal about what motivates us? And what are the underlying beliefs and drivers? These are the current values and beliefs. Using the example above, there might be an underlying belief that we show strength by always being 'on'.

Next, ask your group to capture their thoughts on how they would rather the team be like instead (Future State), compared to this Current State. This is certainly an opportunity to celebrate what is working well, as what needs to change. This should prompt a rich discussion, where a set of more meaningful, strategically connected values will more easily emerge.

Outcomes

- Improved communication and collaboration within the team
- Greater clarity on team beliefs and values
- Increased accountability and ownership of desired behaviours
- Enhanced problem-solving and decision-making capabilities
- Improved team morale and trust between team members

PRO TIP

Don't forget to make the final version of the iceberg available for everyone to see, remember, and hold each other accountable to.
